Raceday is the result of our uncompromising approach to road cycling performance and marks the next step in our quest to redefine the future of road cycling. Raceday is built on the competence of POC’s product development team and developed in close collaboration with Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team, Volvo Car Group and the aerodynamic specialists in WATTS Lab

The small margins of victory are well known in competitive road cycling. Back in 1989 Greg Lemond won the Tour de France by 8 seconds and more recently in 2012, Ryder Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia by 16 seconds after more than 90 hours of riding. Taken across each day of racing the margins of victory represent little more than an average pedal revolution and both Lemond’s and Hesjedal’s wins illustrate that tiny margins matter.

Aerodynamics played a fundamental role in both these victories and have a measurable effect on performance in road cycling. Studies show that up to 90% of a cyclists effort goes into travelling through the air. Significantly, 80% of this air resistance comes from the cyclist’s body and position on the bike.

POC has a history of developing equipment used by Olympic medalists in ski racing, X Games winners and the current world record holder in speed skiing. For Raceday we have taken this experience and applied our cross-scientific approach in order to improve road cycling performance.

Raceday is built on the competence of POC’s product development team and developed in close collaboration with Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team, Volvo Car Group and the aerodynamic specialists in WATTS Lab. WATTS Lab is POC’s highly specialized department, whose objective is to optimize performance and aerodynamics of POC products.

Our research and testing have given us a deeper understanding of the main forces slowing you down, which has allowed us to predict performance at an early stage in the development process. Through CFD simulations and extensive wind tunnel testing together with the aerodynamic specialists in WATTS Lab, we have studied the specific challenges in road cycling performance and importantly not only what to focus on, but also where to focus in order to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

In road cycling there are a lot of crucial areas affecting your performance that have to be considered. Aerodynamics, comfort, breathability and freedom of movement all play an important role and are just a few examples of what needs to be addressed. This holistic approach to performance has guided us throughout the development and has led to the creation of Raceday.

In a lab environment we have studied how different structures, fabrics and designs can support and help us to improve performance. By using the experience and knowledge from textile engineers and technologists, we have carefully researched and chosen fabrics, incorporated different technologies and treatments and worked with different panels, strategically placed for aerodynamic efficiency and improved comfort and breathability.

For us, it has been important to understand and consider every possible aspect affecting your overall performance. We have worked hard to push the boundaries throughout the entire development process with everything from design, manufacturing and making.
